A slower night begins.

The world is loud, bright and always on, and rest is the first thing we give up. Nidravati Vidhana is our offering for the evening's end: one pod, hot water, a few quiet minutes.

After eight

The evening, from eight.

The evening begins at 8:00 pm.

  1. Now

    Close the day

Set work and the screen aside. Phone in another room.

  2. Now

    Let the light fall

Lamps and candlelight. Something soft to wear.

  3. Now

    Prepare

One pod, 350 to 400 ml of water, a bowl or the kettle. Play the Ritual Guide.

  4. Now

    Simmer and wait

Until the water darkens. Do not lean in early.

  5. Now

    Your session

Lean in from a safe distance, eyes closed, and breathe softly. Seven to ten minutes for a short session, fifteen to twenty for a longer one.

  6. Now

    Close the ritual

When the session ends, let the vessel cool. Play the guided meditation, or sit in the quiet.

  7. Now

    The hour of rest

Light low, screen away. The evening asks nothing more.

Eight is a beginning. Start earlier or later, and keep the order.

The ritual

Two ways to keep it.

One pod. Hot water. A few quiet minutes.

Short session

7 to 10 minutes

For a busy evening.

Longer session

15 to 20 minutes

For a slower one.

A woman in a cream robe breathing the steam rising from a bowl, eyes closed

Any bowl

Pour boiling water over one pod in any stable, heatproof bowl. Drape a towel over your head and the bowl as a soft steam tent, and breathe the vapour slowly. Lift the towel whenever it feels too warm. Pod and water are discarded after.

The black electric kettle

Place one pod and the water in the kettle and bring both to the boil. Breathe the vapour from a safe distance. The same pod serves up to three sittings in a day.

Boiling water is hot. Keep the vessel steady and away from edges, children and animals, and keep the face at a comfortable distance, lifting away if the steam feels too hot. For inhalation only; never drunk or applied to the skin. If pregnant or breastfeeding, asthmatic, prone to fragrance-triggered migraine, or under medical care, speak to a doctor first.
